Erotic BA

by: Victoria Nwosu-Hope | 12 November 2009 | printed in: Edition 59 | section: Underground BA

“One cannot understand the essence of a country or society without understanding the web of sexual relations of those that built it. Responsible for the birth, the splendour, the decadence, and the fall of the greatest civilizations, nobody can ignore the profound impact of sexuality on the visual art and stories of nations.” This is the creed which prompted Argentine author, Federico Andahazi, to write ‘Pecar Como Dios Manda’, the sexual history of Argentina.

Fabrica de Fallas: Bugging the System from Within

by: Daniel Edwards | 12 November 2009 | printed in: Edition 59 | section: Underground BA

“There is a legend that in the 1940s a computer error was produced, blamed on an insect that had made its home inside the machine. From this is derived the term “bug”. Our goal is to continue creating these bugs inside the system, to produce errors in order to open the system up to everybody.”

Exporting Subculture: FeatBA

by: Julian Stetter | 10 September 2009 | printed in: Edition 57 | section: Underground BA

In 2004, Grant C. Dull saw it as his challenge to make Buenos Aires’ sub-cultural art scene public and founded ZZK Records and the urban life and arts guide What’s Up Buenos Aires (WUBA). “Just the natural next step” followed in 2009 and he launched FeatBA, an agency unifying music, graphic design and photography, aiming to generate a space in which alternative culture can thrive.

No Hay Monedas? No Hay Problema in the Bartering World

by: Stephanie E. Santana | 10 August 2009 | printed in: Edition 56 | section: Underground BA

Surrounded by packets of homemade cookies and Tia Maria poured into recycled bottles, Alberto Censi, 68, peers up from checking his accounts to look around for any potential buyers. Although he is counting pink, blue and yellow paper notes, do not mistake this for Monopoly money.

The Satisfaction of a Varied Life Headed Nowhere

by: Brian Hagenbuch | 10 July 2009 | printed in: Edition 55 | section: Underground BA

Pablo Mikozzi’s characters go straight at Buenos Aires’ deformities: the xenophobia, the paranoia, the violence, the isolation. He manages the tricky business of transforming grotesque trappings into humour with elegance and ease, making people laugh at themselves while avoiding the sardonic and insulting.

Underground BA: Telos

by: Anthony Bale | 17 April 2009 | printed in: Edition 52 | section: Feature, Underground BA

“I was 25 the first time I went.” says Esteban. “I didn’t want to have sex while my parents were at home, so I went to a telo with my girlfriend. It was fun, a good experience!” Albergues transitorios or ‘telos’ as they are more commonly known, are a type of hotel where a person pays by the hour instead of the whole night. They are used by couples as a place to go to spend ‘intimate’ time together in a discreet and private manner. In other words, they have beds – but not much sleeping gets done.

La Iglesia Maradoniana – Argentina’s real religion?

by: Rupert Howland-Jackson | 1st December 2008 | printed in: Edition 48 | section: Underground BA

I entered the church late: mass already underway, the choir already crooning an unknown vesper and the priest heading to the pulpit. This, however, wasn’t your typical religious service as, rather than a traditional Catholic church as one would expect in Argentina, this was the church of Argentine football legend Diego Maradona.

A Flogging Frenzy

by: Emma Knight | 10 October 2008 | printed in: Edition 46 | section: Underground BA

At first I was sceptical. A 17-year-old girl was on the cover of Perfíl for having posted pictures of herself online each day for the past two years. That’s it. Mind you, these are not pictures of her camping in the Antarctic or doing extreme sports in an armadillo costume. These are pictures of her doing absolutely nothing.

Alternative Theatre: Uncovering New Talent

by: Anette Berve | 18 July 2008 | printed in: Edition 41 | section: Underground BA

While the neon lights of Corrientes may seem inviting, there is a whole other scene in town to be discovered, one without billboards and big names. Alternative theatre in the capital is hotter than ever, with avant-garde plays and actors displaying their work in original spaces.
