Porteñosiendome

by: Rachel Hall | 17 February 2010 | section: The Learner

“Está Porteñosiendose” assure musicians when they explain the presence of a Californian saxophonist turned bandoneonist in their tango orquesta. The cultural oddity they are referring to is Ben Bogart, who alongside playing for the high-profile Orquesta Escuela de Tango Emilio Balcarce, gives bandonéon lessons to students based in the US or Europe over Skype.

Experiencing an Argentine Approach to Mime

by: Victor Lepoutre | 05 February 2010 | section: The Learner

When I think about the art of mime, the first memory that springs to mind is of a Marcel Marceau show I saw when I was a child. This image, combined with the miming performances I have seen on the street, made me think that mimes were provided with special skills I will never have. Going to Alberto Ivern’s class proved I was wrong.

Is the Internet Suitable for Language Classes?

by: Victor Lepoutre | 07 December 2009 | section: The Learner

Spanish schools are now using new technologies to make their classes even more flexible. As it is often difficult to accommodate our lives to an intensive course, as it often involves moving to a Spanish speaking city and put our life on the side for some time. It is also sometimes difficult to find native teachers where you live. More and more, Spanish schools start giving online classes to accommodate to their students lives.

What’s Cooking: Espacio Azaí

by: Eve Turow | 02 November 2009 | section: The Learner

On the corner of Virrey Loreto and Charlone sits an inconspicuous building, no signs or decorations to indicate that behind the simple façade lies the immaculate kitchen of Espacio Azaí, a gourmet cooking facility. I went to Azaí one morning for my first Argentine cooking class.

A Language Exchange that Suits Everyone

by: Victor Lepoutre | 19 October 2009 | section: The Learner

Anybody who speaks a second language will tell you that chatting with a native person in the best way to learn. However, finding a native speaker is not always easy, and how do you know if they are normal and easy to hold a conversation with? For a year, Spanglish has been resolving many of these problems for English and Spanish speakers who want to practise.

Un Lenguaje de Danza

by: Victoria Nwosu-Hope | 05 October 2009 | section: The Learner

There is a Zimbabwean proverb which declares that “If you can walk, you can dance”. After an hour of dancing with Laila Canteros, I most certainly cannot walk. Indeed, Laila Canteros’ ‘Introducción a la técnica de danza AfroContemporáneo’ is incredibly physically demanding, yet undeniably exhilarating. She is a teacher, choreographer, performer and now pioneer of a completely organic form of movement.

Painting like a Porteño

by: Kelsey Marie Bell | 06 August 2009 | section: The Learner

I’ve arrive for a 6 o’clock class with fileteadora Lucero Maturano to learn the art of one of the most widely seen and recognised art styles in Buenos Aires. Everything from corner newspaper stands, restaurants, tango halls and of course, the streets of Caminito display this signature cheerful script embellished with blossoming flowers, whimsical birds, winged-dragons, and horns of plenty.

Hablas felicidad?

by: Verity Mulkeen | 10 June 2009 | printed in: Edition 54 | section: The Learner

Generally, I am not one for sweeping statements, but I can say with some confidence that the happiest people in Buenos Aires work at Amauta Spanish school in Belgrano. With my lesson scheduled for 10am, I was not convinced that my linguist brain would be switched on and functioning properly.

by: Verity Mulkeen | 28 May 2009 | section: The Learner

In Adrogue, there is a house. And in that house there is a woman. And that woman makes amazing empanadas. Not only that, but she is willing to share this wisdom with anybody who takes her empanadas cooking class so you can recreate her mini masterpieces in the comforts of your own home.

Wanna Talk Proper Argentine Spanish?

by: Paul Finnerty | 08 February 2009 | section: The Learner

Have you just arrived in Argentina wanting to show how good your castellano is, only to find out that around these parts they speak a whole lot different? Are you suspecting that your Spanish teacher from Andalucía or Cancun deceived you all along, merely inventing a language just so he can laugh at your screams for help in his email inbox?
