by: Vicky Gashe | 13 March 2010 | section: Round Ups Argentina

The Buenos Aires Committee on Public Works and Services has introduced a bill to install a women only carriage on the Subte. The bill will create a carriage on the H line of the Subte that allows women and children under 12 to travel separately to “prevent situations of hasassment,” said legislator, Gerardo Ingaramo.

Curiosities of the Calles

by: Victoria Nwosu-Hope | 19 February 2010 | section: The City

The feat of navigating the streets of Buenos Aires is not overly taxing. The city’s very regular grid system – although vast – proves utterly manageable, once armed with a trusty ‘Guia-T’ and some sense of where you are and where you are headed. Rather, the enigma of BA’s plethora of 2,159 calles, avenidas, pasajes and autopistas surrounds their names, origins, stories and peculiarities.

Frank Almeida: Founder of Sugar and Spice

by: Rachel Hall | 17 February 2010 | section: BA Lives: the x-pat files

When Frank Almeida followed his girlfriend to Argentina in 1999, he didn’t realise he was on a one way ticket. 54 Bars: Florida Garden

by: Cécile Sourbes | 15 February 2010 | section: The Consumer

Going to Florida Garden, one of the Buenos Aires’ 54 Notable bars, is like going to the British Museum for the first time. There are so many amazing things to see that you don’t really know where to start. The stairs? The bar and its English style? The waiters and their white optical uniforms? Or perhaps, could you glance at the desserts and more especially, at the succulent tarts? Hum… Difficult to say.

54 Bars: Las Violetas

by: Hannah Vinter | 08 February 2010 | section: The Consumer

Walking into Las Violetas feels a bit like getting on board a mini version of the Titanic. Like the famous cruise liner, the interior of this café is an impressive example of Art Nouveau décor, with gold curlicues on the ceiling, Italian marble columns and Tiffany-style stained glass windows.

Experiencing an Argentine Approach to Mime

by: Victor Lepoutre | 05 February 2010 | section: The Learner

When I think about the art of mime, the first memory that springs to mind is of a Marcel Marceau show I saw when I was a child. This image, combined with the miming performances I have seen on the street, made me think that mimes were provided with special skills I will never have. Going to Alberto Ivern’s class proved I was wrong.

Tourists have long felt the pull of Argentina’s stunning landscapes, vibrant culture and sumptuous gastronomy. However, as demand soars for a low cost tummy tuck or affordable fertility treatment, a new attraction is drawing scores of international visitors to the country: the surgeon’s knife. Following in the footsteps of Paris, Rome, Tokyo and Berlin, for the second year running, the Buenos Aires government has brought the beach to the city. From 8th January until 28th February, the banks of the Río de la Plata play host to the ‘Buenos Aires Playa’, an oasis for porteños and visitors alike who have not fled the sweltering metropolis of BA in search of respite on the Uruguayan and Brazilian shores.

54 Bars: Bar Británico

by: Victor Lepoutre | 13 January 2010 | section: The Consumer

Bar Británico is an iconic bar in San Telmo, with a number of films like ‘Motorcycle Diaries’ and ‘Tetro’ (the latest Francis Ford Coppola film) having scenes shot in the bar in the quest of authenticity. The bar opened in 1928, and became home to many artists and journalists, with the likes of Borges being a regular. But have the years treated Bar Británico kindly?
