Buenos Aires has a knack for blending the old with the new, and so do the city’s people. Argentine designer Aidana Baldassarre takes the concept a step further by creating masterpieces out of the city’s discarded materials. For seven years Baldassarre has been making wearable art out of recycled and reused materials to display at fashion shows and galleries, proving that no material should be thrown away.

“I want my products, clothing or accessories, to transmit love, happiness and comfort,” says clothing designer and art student Ivana Crivos. “My designs are basically about the human body. I think about the requirements of modern life.”

Pablo Bernasconi’s ingenious representations of people and animals, often constructing a body out of inanimate objects, have won various prizes worldwide. He designed more than 300 covers for the supplement of Argentine newspaper Clarín and illustrated five children’s books. ‘Retratos’, a book for adults, was published in 2008.

There’s an elephant outside my door. He’s there everyday I step into the milieu of people, greeting me with a brazen stare. Over time I’ve started to recognise his herd about town and greet his brother Rhino in San Telmo or Palermo.

“It’s always good to do things with acrobats because they have skills and powers that normal models don’t,” Cherry matter-of-factly explains between bites of a milanesa sandwich. We’re sitting in a majestically crumbling, high-ceilinged studio near the flea market in Palermo Hollywood.

What would Jasper Conran, the British homeware and fashion designer, make of a necklace made out of orthopaedic leather? Or a lampshade made out of sponge lycra? He is, after all, hailed as the fountainhead of industrial design savvy.

Tucked furtively up a side street off Avenida Santa Fe is the mecca of South American jewellers. An Aladdin’s cave of regal gems and sumptuous showstoppers, Fahoma is an opium den for jewellery junkies craving righteous rocks.

We all know that Buenos Aires is a cultural metropolis. We know that it is full of super interesting and creative people that we would love to meet so that they can tell us about their projects, their lives and their particular view of the world. We know that someone exists, ‘lost’ in Buenos Aires, who can open our minds, who can change us, or even, we surprise ourselves upon realising a complete stranger thinks like we do.
